Dr. Khanna,
My wife Lisa and I accompanied Margaret Conway to her April 10 appointment. We’ve continued to assist both Margaret and her husband, Shorey, seeing them daily and responding to needs as they arise. Their living situation has become completely untenable.
Earlier this year at Shorey’s request, I set up a recording device to capture 24/7 audio from their apartment. Given Margaret’s ability to temporarily hide her condition around people in positions of authority, he felt he needed evidence of her erratic behavior in case the situation deteriorated to its current state.
The recordings reveal Margaret’s ever-increasing disorientation, paranoia, fear, and rage. What’s convinced me to finally send this letter, however, are her recent threats. Typically accompanied by throwing things and slamming her walker on the floor, they range from burning down their apartme, to shooting Shorey dead, to tumbling herself down the front steps. While these may never come to fruition, the atmosphere is taking a tremendous toll on Shorey—who, in Margaret’s absence, we believe is wholly capable of living on his own.
Margaret’s brother Stephen is aware of the situation, but having never seen it up close, he doesn’t fully appreciate the urgency to find a resolution—or the potential consequences of ignoring it. I hope you can provide some guidance.
Warmly, David & Lisa Rice
